Sir Robert IV was born in 1160 in Ros, Holderness, York, Eng. Sir Robert IV's father was Everard de Ros and his mother was Roise Trussebut. His paternal grandparents were Robert III de Ros and Sibyl de Valognes; his maternal grandparents were Willaim Trussebut and Aubreye de Harcourt. He was an only child.
