Lyman Russell was born in 1838 in Illinois. Lyman Russell's father was Lyman Thurston and his mother was Amy Albro. His paternal grandparents were Ebenezer Thurston and Eunice Kelsey. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Henry, Anson, Joseph, Franklin, E., Hiram M., Lydia, Jane and Emma. He was the third youngest of the ten children.
