His paternal grandparents were Sir John Gaynesford and Anne Wakehurst; his maternal grandparents were Otewell Worsley and Rose Trevor. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Nicholas, Ottwell, George, Letitia, Isabella, Jacosa, Constania, Kate and Margaret. He was the third oldest of the ten children.
