Merritt was born in 1846. Merritt's father was Jeptha Trantham and his mother was Mary Wright. His paternal grandparents were Joseph C Trantham and Sarah Michaels. He was an only child. He died at the age of 90 in 1936 in Clyde, Haywood Co., Nc.
