della was born in March 1883 in Tx. Della's father was John Kenneth Hopwood and her mother was Jennie L. Martin. Her paternal grandparents were Doctor Green Hopwood and Sophronia J. McIntosh. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Lonnie, Elzie, Otto, Willie Eva Lena, Helen May, Myrtle and Mattie.
