Hamo was born in 1070. Hamo's father was Piers Valognes and his mother was Albreda Rie. His paternal grandparents were Enguerand Ponthieu and Adeliza Normandy; his maternal grandfather was Hubert Rie. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Robert, Roger, Muriel, Muriel, Matilda and Sibyl. He was the oldest of the seven children.-
