Carrie was born on May 25th, 1892 in Monroe County, Indiana. Carrie's father was David Jefferson Shields and her mother was Cordelia Sexton. Her paternal grandparents were James Madison Shields and Martha J. Sciscoe. She had two brothers and three sisters, named James Glen, Noble "Jack", Zelma, Ruth Elizabeth and Mildred Elizabeth. She was the oldest of the six children. She died at the age of 79 on August 10th, 1971 in Monroe County, Indiana. She was buried in Mt. Ebal Cemetery, Clear Creek Twp., Monroe Co., Indiana.-
