in 843, Kenneth claims and wins Dalriada Scots throne, and the Pictish
throne through his maternal lineage (and war). He moves the capital to
Scone, bringing the Stone of Destiny. He also shifted the religious
center from Columba's Iona to Dunkeld. He
is the first Scottish King, ruling north of the Forth. It is difficult
to unite the 2 peoples, but the Viking raids bring common focus. Norse
kings rule Orkney and much of the Hebrides. Kenneth is followed by a
number of Kings that are his
descendants, but not his immediate heirs, nor is the Pictish system of
accepting the maternal line utilized. It appears that a powerful member
of the family, supported by other powerful members, comes to the throne.
