Polly's father was David Garland and her mother was Mary Cheadle. Her paternal grandfather was Edward Garland; her maternal grandparents were John Cheadle and Letttice Southern. She had six brothers and two sisters, named William Terrell, David, Edward, Peter, Robert, Thomas, Elizabeth and Mary.-
