Her maternal grandparents were Halvor Steingrimson and Birgit 3 Nilsdtr Lostegaard. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Henry Tilford, Son Stemson, Bessie Malina, Ella Elvine, Minnie, Nettie, Rosa, Daisy and Anna. She was the third oldest of the ten children.
