His paternal grandparents were John P. Pittaway and Francis Price; his maternal grandparents were Nathan Skinner Young and Ann Hill Bryant. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Ernest Claud, Oscar Floyd, Orville Guy, George Eugene, Ethel Claire, Jennie Evelyn, Mabel Lois, Laura Irene, Grace Agnes, Olive Zimmina and Dora Irene.
