John, known as The Marshall, was born about 1105 in Pembroke,Pembrokeshire,Wales.  The Marshall's father was Gilbert Marshall and his mother was Lady Amaline De Venuz.  His paternal grandfather was Goisfrid Marshall; his maternal grandfather was Geoffery De Venuz.  He was an only child.  He died in 1165.

‌The Marshall and Sybil were married in a religious ceremony in 1143.  They had four sons and two daughters, named John, Anselm, Henry, The Protector, Maud and Daughter Of.
