Alexander was born about 1276 in Kildrummy,Aberdeenshire,Scotland. Alexander's father was Donald MAR and his mother was Elen (Helen) Ferch Llywelyn. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Gratney, Duncan, Marjory, Isabell and Mary. He was the third youngest of the six children. He had a half-sister named Hawise.
