Tomás José was born in Sobreiral, Braga (Portugal). Tomás José's father was Domingos Martins (Filho) and his mother was Páscoa Afonso. His paternal grandparents were Domingos Martins and Maria Afonso; his maternal grandparents were Felipe Esteves Afonso and Maria Afonso. He was an only child.
Tomás José and Lourença Álvares were married in a religious ceremony on August 7th, 1764 in Cabração, Ponte DE Lima, Viana Do Castelo (Pt). They had a son named João Antônio Pereira.
