Maria's father was Antonio Álvares Martins and her mother was Luzia Gonçalves De Aguiar (De Moura).  Her maternal grandparents were Manoel Gonçalves De Aguiar and ?. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Antonio Álvares De, José, Francisco Álvares De, Bernarda and Luzia.
