Juan's father was Pedro I "El Cruel" 8º Rey De Portugal and his mother was Constanza Manuel De Villena-Escalona-Penafiel.  His paternal grandmother was Beatriz De Castilla; his maternal grandfather was Don Juan Manuel Infante De Castilla. He had a brother named Fernando I "El Gentil". He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Juan I "El Falso" and Beatriz (Brites).

He had a biological son named Fernando.
