Josefa was born in 1802 in Arroyo Seco, Montevideo, Uruguay. Josefa's father was Bartolo Jose Arias Y Sarmiento and her mother was Manuela (Ramona) Palacios Pereira. Her paternal grandparents were Blas Mariano Arias and Petrona Sarmiento; her maternal grandparents were Felipe Palacios Gaitâan and Crispina Pereira Arista. She had a brother, and also a sibling of unknown gender named Juan Ramâon and Arias Y Palacios. She was the oldest of the three children. She died at the age of 84 on August 6th, 1886 in La Aguada, Montevideo, Montevideo.-
