Joseph was born about 1802.1 Joseph's father was Levi Pennington and his mother was Elizabeth Ray. His paternal grandparents were Levi Pennington and Martha. He had eight brothers and four sisters, named Levi, Benjamin, Isaac, William M., John, Jesse M., Solomon, Noah, Elizabeth, Rachel, Sarah and Mary. He was the fourth youngest of the thirteen children.-
