Her paternal grandparents were Levi Pennington and Elizabeth Ray. She had eight brothers and three sisters, named John B., William, Benjamin, Joseph M., George Washington, Alfred, James Ervin, Franklin, Mary, Nancy and Viney. She was the third youngest of the twelve children.-
