Hyfaidd was the son of Princess Tangwystl of Dyfed by a lowborn Welshman named Bledrig. He was known as something of a tyrant
who often plundered the Cathedral of Mynyw (St.Davids) and expelled the monks. However, Hyfaidd had his own oppressor in the
person of King Anarawd of Gwynedd and his brothers. In order to stop Anarawd's conquests at the Dyfed border, Hyfaidd submitted to
the overlordship of King Alfred the Great of England in the 880s, as described by Asser, the latter's biographer. He died in 893.
