His paternal grandparents were Jacob Mott and Cassandra Southwick; his maternal grandparents were Henry Cook and Mary Hall. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Jonathan, Samuel, James, Richard, Lent, Mary M., Eunice and Elizabeth.
