This family took its name from its land of Markham in Nottingham, England. Alexander de Markham (Alexander of Markham) was Constable of the Castle of Nottingham in the reign of Henry III. From him descended Sir John Markham, Knight Judge of the Common Pleas in The Reigns of Richard II. Henry IV (1396-1407).
James Marcum, Secretary to John Rolfe husband of Pocahontas was the first Marcum to come to America. This Marcum was in the settlement of James Town, Virginia (1607) led by Captain John Smith. This was before the May Flower compact (1621). The Marcum's became business men and farmers of Virginia.
Decendents of this first Marcum, Thomas Marcum, Sr., who lived in Stakes County N.C. married Mary (Polly) Wilson of Virginia, December 30, 1800.
Soon after the wedding (1800-1802) this Marcum family and his father-in-law, Philip Wilson, Sr., and his wife Rebecca Herd Wilson came to the Frontier Land of Kentucky. They settled on Cow Creek (now Owsley County). Here Thomas Marcum, Sr. and his wife Mary Wilson Marcum raised (12) twelve children.
