He was the Earl of Wessex and Kent (1018 - 1053).the most powerful man in England during the reign of Edward the Confessor. He became a favorite of
Canute, whom he accompanied to Denmark in 1019. His wife, Gytha, was the sister of Canute's brother-in-law, Ulf. On Canute's death, he supported
Hardicanute, but later hoined Harold's party. He arrested the atheling Alfred when he came from Normandy in 1036, but bought his peace. He had great power
in the early part of the reign of Edward the Confessor, securing an earldom, including Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Somerset, for
his son Sweyn in 1043, and East Anglia for Harold (afterward known as Harold II) in 1044, and in 1045 he married his daughter Edith to the king.
