Her paternal grandparents were Robert Clifford and Isabel De Berkeley; her maternal grandparents were Thomas De Beauchamp and Catherine De Mortimer. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Lewis, Thomas, William, Isabella, Mary, Margaret, Philippa and Maud. She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
