Mary Ann was born in 1853 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Mary Ann's father was John Winstead and her mother was Fanny Lawson. Her paternal grandparents were Ezekiel Winstead and Mourning Watkins. She had nine brothers and three sisters, named William, Malin, Gaines, James, Madison, Amos Jackson, John Wilson, Fuller Willis, John Mallot, Nancy Jane, Orlena and Sarah. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Rufas and Laura.-
