Living's father was William Stroup and her mother was Mary Jane Thompson. Her paternal grandparents were Jacob Jackson Stroup and Elizabeth Myers. She had eleven brothers and five sisters, named John, Samuel Alexander, McFirlon, Eli, Roy, Lee Hulbert, George Washington, Arrie Ruben, Fitzbaugh Lee, Living, William Henry, Bessie Mae, Clora Dortha, Elisa Ann, Laura Naomi and Margaret Elizabeth.
