His paternal grandparents were Jacob Jackson Stroup and Elizabeth Myers; his maternal grandparents were George W. Coats and Sarah. He had four brothers and two sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named James, Bert Oliver, Enos Eldridge, Living, Elizabeth, Mary Ellen and Stroup.-
