Joseph was born on September 12th, 1781 in ,Alleghany, Pennsylvania.1   Joseph's father was Daniel Shawhan and his mother was Margaret Bell. He had a brother named John.  He died at the age of 90 on September 15th, 1871 in ,Harrison, Kentucky.1
