Christian was born in 1838 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Christian's father was Michael Shanks and his mother was Leah. His paternal grandparents were Christian Shanks and Margaret Pearson. He had six brothers and three sisters, named William, Henry, Michael, Thomas, Franklin, Doctor, Harriet, Jane and Sarah. He was the third oldest of the ten children.-
