His paternal grandparents were John Roberts and Agnes Buckfold Gent; his maternal grandparents were Richard Stephen Naylor and Elizabeth. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Clement, Thomas, Edmond, George, Martin, Walter, Anne, Dorothy and Jana. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named John, Elizabeth and Mercy.-
