Matthew was born in 1775 in Ireland.1   Matthew's father was Joseph Rhea.  His paternal grandparents were Matthew II Rhea and Elizabeth McLain. He had three brothers named John, Matthew IV and Samuel.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 41 in 1816 in Sullivan County, Tennessee.1
