In December of 1995, I wrote the Lumpkin County Courthouse and requested
his birth certificate. In their response, they said their birth records
did not go that far back as the records were not required until 1921.
"Samuel Combest and His Descendants" book
Patrick was the son and second child of Benjamin Pierce Patterson and
Martha J. Peck. He was born in Lumpkin County, Georgia on August 1, 1846.
The family moved back and forth between Tennessee and Georgia until his
father was conscripted into the Army of the Confederacy in 1863. He
signed an oath of allegiance to the United States on December 10, 1863 in
Louisville, Kentucky and joined his family in Russell County, Kentucky.
Patrick had already left home and about the first of November 1862, he
lied about his age and joined Captain Buster's Company, Thirty-second
Regiment of the Kentucky Volunteer Infantry. Although Benjamin Patterson
had lived in the South for nearly twenty years, his loyalty lay with the
North. He was from the Blue Grass State, the birthplace of Lincoln, and
could not bring himself to fight in a war against his own son. Patrick
spent most of his time in the hospital at Somerset in Palaski County,
Kentucky following his 1862 enlistment. He had contracted measles. He was
mustered out on August 12, 1863 and, being young and full of adventure,
joined the 13th Kentucky Cavalry in Clinton, Kentucky on September 28,
1863. After his discharge from the service on January 10, 1865, Patrick,
six feet tall with dark hair and blue eyes -- a dashing man in uniform --
met Gilla Ann Combest. The young couple was married in Russell County,
Kentucky.
His son Howard Morton Patterson was born April 5, 1868.
After his discharge from the cavalry, he settled down to the life of a
farmer in Russell County, Kentucky. Mary, Patrick William, Martha, Patsy,
Florence and Luther were born to Patrick and Gillie in Russell or Casey
County, Kentucky.
The measles he had contracted in the army settled in his eyes. He became
totally blind in his right eye and had only a small percentage of vision
in his left eye. At the age of thiry-seven, in 1883, he was drawing
$17.00 per month as a full disability pension from the U.S. Government.
It was increased to $24.00 in 1885 and to $100.00 by 1920.
In the early part of 1892, he moved to Collin County, Texas. His brother
Thomas was there along with his son, Howard and several members of the
Combest family. Around 1907 most of the Patterson families moved from
Collin County to Clay County, Texas. Patrick bought a farm of 160 acres
about 19 miles north of Henrietta, Texas. He was not to remain there
long, as Gillie went to homestead land in Union County, New Mexico
Territory with their son Luther. Patrick returned to Russell County,
Kentucky. On Septermber 18, 1908, Gillie Ann Patterson was granted a
divorce from Patrick in Union County, New Mexico. One yar from the date
of his divorce, on September 8, 1909, he married Martha E. Wilkerson in
Liberty, Kentucky. He remained married to here unitl the day of his death
on January 11, 1925. His will was probated in Russell County, Kentucky on
February 10, 1925. In his will he mentions his wife, Martha, son Howard,
daughters Mary, Martha and Florence.
On September 23, 1910 Gillie Ann Patterson sent $2000.00 to Clay County,
Texas to pay off the note held by J.W. Douthitt on the 160 acres in Clay
County. On September 3, 1913, she sold the 160 acres to the same J.W.
Douthitt for $3000.00 cash and a note of $1000.00 to be paid within
twelve months.
She went to live with her son, Howard in Riverland Community, Clay County
Texas where she remained until her death February 20, 1920. She lies in
an unmarked grave (I found a Clay County Cemetery record book which
showed a gravestone) in Riverland Cemetery, Clay County Texas and next to
her is her son, Howard.
