His paternal grandparents were Samuel McPheeters and Margaret Seawright. He had three brothers and six sisters, named George, William, John Bovell, Elizabeth, Margaret, Sarah, Lucinda, Lucretia and Rebecca. He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.-
