Jesse's father was George Maxwell and his mother was Sarah Ann Armstrong. His paternal grandparents were David Donegal Maxwell and Nellie McCullough; his maternal grandparents were William Armstrong and Mary Caldwell. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Solomon, William, Matilda and Ann.
