Tivis was born in 1856 in ,Hawkins, TN.1 Tivis' father was George Manis and his mother was Sarah Lawson. He had eight brothers and a sister, named Cain, James, Powell, Isom, William, John, Enoch, Kendrick and Nancy. He was the second youngest of the ten children.
