Manila was born in 1842 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Manila's father was Pleasant Manis and her mother was Sarah. Her paternal grandparents were John Manis and Celia. She had three brothers and nine sisters, named James, Landon C., Andrew J., Nancy, Melvina, Susan, Catherine, Esther, Ida, Sarah A., Johana and Mary F.. She was the second oldest of the thirteen children.-
