James was born in 1842 in ,Harrison, Kentucky.1 James' father was Robert Kimbrough and his mother was Elizabeth Frazier. His paternal grandparents were William Kimbrough and Elizabeth Walton; his maternal grandparents were James Frazier and Catherine Hendricks. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, Robert, Mary, Ellen and Eliza.-
