John's father was Michael Kimberlin and his mother was Minerva Jane Summers. His paternal grandparents were Renor E. Kimberlin and Francis Peters. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Valentine S., Joseph Anderson, Ruben Harmon, William, Charles, James H., Mary and Julia.
