Ella was born in 1862 in ,Bourbon, Kentucky.1 Ella's father was William Luther Hutchcraft and her mother was Catherine Or Kate Wells. Her paternal grandparents were Reuben Lee Hutchcraft and Frances Hedges; her maternal grandfather was Joshua Wells. She had two brothers and eight sisters, named Reuben, Hutchcraft, Franklin, Nannie, Hallie, Frances Or Fannie, Ida, Effie, Nettie and Catherine Or Kate. She was the oldest of the eleven children.-
