Gaines was born in 1880 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Gaines' father was Milton Harrell and his mother was Nancy Jane Sandidge. His paternal grandparents were Jacob Harrell and Elizabeth Vaughn. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, Robert, James, John, Joseph, Mary, Delphia and Geneva. He was the youngest of the nine children.-
