Sarah was born about 1798 in ,Halifax, North Carolina.1 Sarah's father was John Gordon and her mother was Anna Haynes. Her paternal grandfather was John Gordon; her maternal grandparents were Andrew Haynes and Ann Eaton. She had six brothers and five sisters, named John, James, Thomas, William, Joseph, George Haynes, Nancy Ann, Mary Margaret, Elizabeth, Lucy and Elizabeth. She was the youngest of the twelve children.-
