Margaret was born in 1855 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Margaret's father was Joseph Galbraith and her mother was Teresa Lopez Lee. Her paternal grandparents were Andrew Galbraith and Elizabeth Laughlin; her maternal grandparents were Edward B. Lee and Sarah Tensley. She had six brothers and three sisters, named William, Harvey, Audley, Andrew, Hugh, Joseph C., Mary, Matilda and Matilda A.. She was the fourth youngest of the ten children.-
