William Henry's father was Thomas Fain and his mother was Rachel Anderson. His paternal grandparents were John Reuben Fain and Eleanor Crawford; his maternal grandparents were John Anderson and Rachel Roberts. He had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Samuel Anderson, Hugh, Thomas George, Amelia Elizabeth, Eleanor Rachel, Hannah Anderson, Isabella Ruth and Nancy Jane.-
