John R.'s father was Samuel Anderson Fain and his mother was Rachel Jennie Hicks. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Fain and Rachel Anderson. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Joseph William, Hugh Lott, Samuel Perry, Thomas Henry, Ellen Elizabeth, Grace, Martha Isabelle and Mary Rachel.-
