Mary Jane was born in 1847 in Of, Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Mary Jane's father was George Dodson and her mother was Teresa Amanda Thrasher. Her maternal grandfather was Isaac Thrasher. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Isaac, James K., Tabitha, Rachel, Elizabeth and Westy. She was the third oldest of the seven children.
