Her paternal grandparents were George Cresswell and Hannah Cliff; her maternal grandparents were Joseph Simpson and Lovey Coats. She had a brother and two sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named George S., Hannah L., Emily and William G.. She was the second oldest of the five children.-
