N. S. R. was born in 1858 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 N. S. R.'s father was William H. Cocheran and his mother was Eleanor Saunders. His paternal grandparents were John Cocheran and Sarah Or Sally; his maternal grandparents were James Saunders and Jane. He had two brothers and six sisters, named John, James W., Matilda, Sarah, Hila A., Ellen, Rebecca and Laura. He was the youngest of the nine children.-
