Her paternal grandparents were William Mitchell Clay and Tabitha Pierce; her maternal grandparents were Richard Belcher and Phoebe Obed Clay. She had seven brothers and seven sisters, named Bartley, Charles, David, Ezekiel, Henry J., Mitchell, William, Mary, Nannie, Obedience, Polly, Rebecca, Sarah and Tabitha.-
