George's father was William Church and his mother was Isabel Payne. His paternal grandparents were Henry C. Church and Mary Olive Surginer; his maternal grandparents were Enoch Payne and Sarah England. He had a brother and six sisters, named Hiram, Rebecca Ann, Almira, Eliza, Mary, Rosannah and Sarah Ann. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Thomas, Alleany Adeline, Ellen and Malvina.-
