His paternal grandparents were Moses Byington and Mary Ann White; his maternal grandparents were Jonas Fish and Rhoda M.. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named George W., Alexander, George, Moses E., Richard Carr, William Jefferson, Edward, Mary L., Rhoda M., Florence Belle and Nancy E.. He was the third youngest of the twelve children.-
